Our story

Heritage of the Cape

In 1979, the Maharajah was born on a simple idea: To offer a meal worthy of the name Maharajah, at a modest price, while serving traditional Indian flavours and using a range of authentic South African Indian cooking techniques.

40 Years later, and more meals than we can count, the Maharajah is still hosted by the same family, and serving meals true to its heritage. The place, over the decades, has vibrated to the rhythm of all those who fell in love with the rich decadent flavors. In doing so, the Maharajah has acquired more than a unique personality, it inherited a soul – the culinary jewel of the Cape

Maharajah currently has two stores located in Cape Town. Our branch in Tamboerskloof is tucked away right below Table Mountain and offers a warm, vibrant and cosy dining experience. Our service style emphasizes hospitality with knowledgeable staff who are present yet unobtrusive.  Our new branch, Maharajah Eatery, recently opened its doors in Rondebosch and offers a more laid-back modern approach.

Come in and enjoy our unparalleled hospitality, we can’t wait to share it with you.

What our customers say

Fantastic Indian food, great service!

"Such an awesome experience - we ordered 4 different main meals for 5 people and this was a great idea! We could not finish every last bit as the food is incredibly filling and really very tasty. The lamb curry on the bone (falling off the bone) might have been the winner of the night, but only just as every other dish was as delicious! The service is great, the staff are experienced and makes you feel at home from the minute you walk through the door. I will definitely go back, and highly recommend the restaurant."

Great butter chicken

"Never been to the Kloof location, but I order food from the location in Rondebosch frequently. Best Indian food I've had in Cape Town. The butter chicken and roti are fantastic, but wasn't a fan of the samosas. The food always comes quickly. Great value for a quick meal."

Great Indian Culinary Experience!

"Easily accessible using MyCiti Bus, the Maharajah restaurant was well worth with the visit. The staff were friendly and engaging while not being intrusive- and while it was full, it did not feel overly noisy. The meal was simply great. Between the four of us we notably had mixed Samoosas as an appetizer, followed by chicken curry, chicken korma, and a vegetarian dish made up of Brinjal, peas and of course Basmati rice. We also had Nan, which was really good. Recommended for vegetarians."

The most delicious and authentic curry in Cape Town CBD.

"Maharajah is by far one of the best curry restaurants in Cape Town. Very good line fish option, also done in a curry sauce, and a wide range of vegetarian vegetarian options too. All meals are delicious and you can choose your level of spice in several dishes. Highly recommended for an authentic Indian feast at a very reasonable price."

Best Durban curry

"Being an ex Durban couple we have always loved curry but forgot how good the Durban tasting curry was, well no more. Maharajah definitely cooks their curry the Durban style and we will be visiting many times to work through the menu"

Delicious Flavors

"My husband and I visited Cape Town on our honeymoon, and came here one of the evenings for dinner. They were booked up, so we had a late dinner, and the wait was well worth it. The flavors were incredible. Everything we ordered was delicious, and the service was excellent."
